As the child of a Pentecostal minister in Uganda, Val Kalende was taught that she was a sinner: her same sex attraction, the work of the devil. Still, she desperately yearned for a relationship with God and a church community that might welcome her whole self.

How lucky are we, at First Parish in Waltham, that Val walked through our doors on that life long journey, and has decided to stay. In fact she is so moved by Unitarian Universalism that she is discerning a call to UU ordination.

You can read about Val Kalenda a beloved, outspoken activist in the LGBTQ community of Uganda. But the danger of that work, the exhaustion it caused, has made her seek refuge here in our country.

In this service, Val will share her story with us. And Rev. Becky will reflect on the theology and history of our faith tradition which calls us to not only welcome, but celebrate Val as a beloved sibling come home.
